Valentine's Day (Monday, February 14th) is the focus for February. This is one of the toughest "holidays" of the florists' year.
First of all, the date moves through the week making it a "different experience" every year. This year Valentine's Day is on Monday - probably the hardest day for us.
Being primarily a man's holiday, orders tend to come in at the last minute. But, men want their Sweetie to have her gift delivered to work so all of her friends can see what a great guy he is. However, he neglects to place his order until Monday morning! Now, we can't accommodate his delivery request because our delivery routes are full until late in the day and by then, Sweetie will have gone home. Yes, a bit of an exaggeration, but don't be disappointed - ORDER EARLY!
Weather is always a concern in February - the good possibility of cold temperatures and snow make it not only harder for customers to come in to shop, but make delivery a challenge, as well.
Because winter is the most costly time of year to grow flowers, the price we pay takes a jump in February. And, in order to supply the large quantity of roses needed for Valentine's Day, growers "crop" their rose plants to flush in early February which necessitates a loss of production earlier in their growth cycle.
Roorbach's bus trip to the Chicago Flower Show has again been very popular. The bus scheduled for Tuesday, March 15th is full but, there are a few seats remaining for the Friday, March 18th bus. If you are interested, please call Barb for further information: 682-7711 x113.
In the greenhouses now you will see baby Geraniums - hundreds/thousands of them! The "mother plants" are grown in Mexico (the perfect climate for Geraniums). Within two days the cuttings are taken, sorted, packed, shipped through the port of Miami, and planted (called "sticking") here in Manitowoc - "sticking" is done on Tuesdays if you'd like to see how it's done.
After Christmas, we greenhouse people immediately "Think Spring" because it takes almost six months to prepare the plants for your spring garden. Now is a great time to visit, you are always invited to browse in the greenhouses - see what's growing, ask questions, breath the clean, fresh air. The next best thing to Florida and a whole lot cheaper, too!
